PenPal Terms of Use
Last updated: 8 October 2026
These terms explain the rules for using PenPal, a study assistant app for students. Please read them before you use the app. By creating an account or using PenPal, you agree to these terms and to the PenPal Privacy Policy.
PenPal is provided by Blossom Osiuhwu ("we", "us"). You can contact us at support@penpalstudy.com.
1. Who can use PenPal
You must be 16 or older to use PenPal. By using the app, you confirm that you are at least 16.
2. Your licence to use the app
We give you a personal, non-transferable licence to use PenPal on Apple devices you own or control, for your own studying. If you downloaded PenPal from the App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User Licence Agreement also applies. If these terms and Apple's agreement conflict, Apple's agreement applies to the extent required by Apple.
3. Recording lectures
PenPal can record and transcribe lectures. You are responsible for making sure you're allowed to record.
- Before you record, check that your lecturer, institution, and anyone else being recorded allow it. Many universities and colleges have rules about recording.
- Only use recordings and transcripts for your own studying. Don't share them publicly or with others without permission from the people recorded and the institution.
- Laws about recording people differ between countries. You must follow the laws that apply to you.
Recordings stay on your device and are deleted automatically after 14 days unless you choose to keep them.
4. Scanning and linking to material
You can scan pages from books and other material, or paste links to online sources.
- Only scan or link to material you have lawful access to, and use it for private study, research, criticism, or review, as copyright law allows.
- Don't use PenPal to copy, share, or republish other people's work in a way that infringes their copyright.
5. AI-generated content
PenPal uses Apple Intelligence, which runs on your device, to create study material such as slides, notes, post-its, explanations, breakdowns, quizzes, study plans, and tutor answers.
- AI can make mistakes. Generated content may be incomplete, inaccurate, or misleading. Always check important information against your course materials and sources.
- Generated content is a study aid. It isn't professional, academic, medical, legal, or financial advice.
6. References and academic integrity
PenPal can create references and citations automatically, including by looking up a book's ISBN online or reading details from a web page.
- Always check references before you submit work. Details may be missing or wrong, and your institution may use a different version of a referencing style.
- You are responsible for following your institution's rules on academic integrity, including rules about using AI tools. Don't submit AI-generated content as your own work where that isn't allowed.
7. Your content
Your recordings, transcripts, scans, notes, and other content remain yours. We don't claim ownership of them, and we don't have access to them: they're stored on your device and, if you turn it on, in your own iCloud account. You're responsible for keeping copies of anything important.
8. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use PenPal in a way that breaks the law or anyone else's rights, including privacy and copyright;
- record people without the permission required;
- try to interfere with, reverse engineer, or misuse the app, except where the law allows; or
- use PenPal to harass, harm, or deceive anyone.
9. Availability and changes to the app
We may update, change, or stop offering features of PenPal. Some features depend on your device, Apple Intelligence, and online services such as Google Books and Open Library, which may not always be available.
10. Free trial and PenPal Pro subscriptions
Free trial. Every PenPal tool is free until you've used 120 minutes of lecture transcription. After that, recording lectures and the AI study tools (slides, post-its, notes, breakdowns, quizzes, study plans, and the tutor) need a PenPal Pro subscription. Scanning and referencing stay free, and you keep access to everything you've already made.
PenPal Pro is an auto-renewable subscription, offered monthly or yearly. The price is shown in the app and on the App Store before you buy.
- Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
- Your subscription renews automatically at the same price and for the same length of time unless you turn off auto-renew at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the current period ends.
- You can manage or cancel your subscription at any time in your Apple Account settings, or from Profile in PenPal. If you cancel, PenPal Pro stays active until the end of the period you've paid for.
- If we change the price, Apple will tell you in advance and, where required, ask for your consent before charging the new price.
- Purchases are processed by Apple under Apple's terms. Refunds are handled by Apple: you can request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. This doesn't affect your rights as a consumer under the law of your country.
11. Liability
We provide PenPal "as is" and, as far as the law allows, without promises that it will be error-free or always available. As far as the law allows, we're not responsible for losses caused by mistakes in generated content or references, by recordings you make, or by loss of data.
Nothing in these terms limits your rights as a consumer under the law of your country, or our liability where it can't legally be limited, for example for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
12. Ending your use
You can stop using PenPal at any time by deleting the app. Deleting the app removes the data stored on your device; you can delete data stored in iCloud in your device's iCloud settings. We may suspend access if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If we make important changes, PenPal will ask you to review and accept the new terms before you continue using it.
14. Law
These terms are governed by the laws of Ireland. If you're a consumer, you can also rely on the mandatory consumer protections of the country where you live, and bring proceedings in your local courts.
